Update 14 July 2009
The 118 800 web site has been taken down whilst they
'improve' their site.
One of the new features will be an improved 'opt out'
process.
As soon as we have more information about how you can
opt we will let you know.
118 opt out
Unlike Mobile118 where you have to join before being
added to our directory, there is a new service 118 800
owned by Connectivity Ltd that gathers its mobile numbers
slightly differently.
At mobile118 we strongly believe the best business model
is asking people who want their number listed to join
our service as you may have inadvertently added your number
by joining another service or signing up to an offer.
Unlike us, 118800 compile their numbers from three sources.
Firstly, by using market research companies who contact
individuals and ask if they would be prepared to allow
their numbers to be used for commercial purposes.
Secondly , from online businesses who ask customers to
tick boxes during the normal course of online transactions.
This is also used to send you corespondents through the
post.
Lastly, 118800 gets numbers from brokers who buy and sell
lists of phone numbers. Mobile 118 does not take part
in this and has never sold any numbers to 118 800 or any
third parties.
Privacy campaigners have been angered by the system despite
it being approved by the Information Commissioner's Office
(ICO).
The ICO said that opting out of the service should be
made easy for those not wanting their details to be used
in the directory.

Mobile 118
Mobile 118 never lists any numbers unless you have personally
asked for your number to be added to our site and confirmed
your details. However, if you wish to leave please contact
us and we will remove you as soon as possible.
